Haiti - Health : Donation of $800,000 to the Cuban medical brigade
This Thursday, was signed an agreement whereby, Norway donated 800.000 U.S. dollars to support the work of the Cuban medical brigade in Haiti, creating health infrastructures and fight against the cholera epidemic. This is the third contribution of Norway to the Cuban medical brigade, for a total of $2.5 million.
The signing took place in Havana, to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment (MINCEX), was signed on the Cuban side by Marcia Cobas Ruiz, Vice Minister of Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) and its counterpart Ileana Nuñez Mordoche of MINCEX. For Norway, the document was signed by John Petter Opdahl, Norwegian Ambassador accredited in Havana. Were present at the ceremony, Mr. Jean Victor Geneus, Ambassador of the Republic of Haiti in Cuba and other authorities of MINSAP and of MINCEX and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba.
"Norway is in Haiti with many projects, we spent $ 150 million until July 2012, and we will continue to cooperate with the Haitian people," said John Petter Opdahl in the presence of the Ambassador of Haiti in Cuba and Lorenzo Somarriba, the Head of the Cuban medical brigade.
The Deputy Minister Cobas thanked "The contribution of Norway" and called for "greater international cooperation with the Haitian people." For his part, Somarriba explained that the medical brigade in Haiti, currently composed of 723 doctors, nurses and paramedics, has also received help from Namibia, Australia, Brazil and some NGOs, German and American.
