Message from the President of El Salvador to the Haitian People

"People of Haiti,

We have nearly completed the deployment of our soldiers and equipment on Haitian soil. This is neither an operation directed against the Haitian people nor an invasion of Haiti. We are not a great power. We have no interest in dominating the Haitian people, nor in seizing Haiti’s wealth.

We are a modest, developing nation. Our sole objective is the safe return of our four aeronautical technicians. Furthermore, we intend to teach a lesson to these gangs, gangs that cause the Haitian people to suffer, kill their loved ones, and prevent them from leading a normal life, free and devoid of any fear.

We are covering nearly the entire cost of this operation. Although we have received limited logistical support from a few other nations, we are funding 90% of the expenses from our own resources, admittedly modest.

This represents a high cost for us, but we have learned, through our own suffering, that justice and peace are priceless. We have endured the very same hardships that Haiti is going through today. We experienced a bloodbath even more horrific than what the Haitian people are currently suffering. We know what it means to live in fear, to distrust politicians, and to believe no one when aid is promised because, back then, no one came to our rescue, and those who did arrive had no good intentions.

Yet, we managed to escape that reality. After 200 years of suffering, we are finally living in peace, and today, we are the safest country on the continent.

We did not come to Haiti to make money; no one is paying us for this. We came to Haiti to fight the gangs.

Here is what I ask of you: trust us, pray to the one true God, and ask Him to heal Haiti.

'if my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.' 2 Chronicles 7:14

Help us to assist Haiti.

And when our mission is accomplished, we will return home. Perhaps future generations of Haitians will remember us as friends who once came to offer their help."

President Nayib Bukele
