Haiti - Economy : 62 Savings and Credit Cooperatives, 40.13 Billion Gourdes in Assets

In observance of the International Day of Credit Unions, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) invites you to explore, through a summary and key figures, the role of Credit Unions (CUs) in Haiti, and the factors that allow them to remain a stable anchor for their members and communities, even amidst turbulence. As of 2026, there were 62 credit unions in Haiti licensed by the BRH.

1 - Proximity in the Service of Financial Inclusion : Credit unions bring financial services closer to underserved communities. In several localities—notably Dano, Belle-Anse, and Marre-Rouge, they are often the only financial institutions present.

When insecurity complicates travel and access to services, this local presence becomes especially vital.

2 - Mobilizing Savings, Financing Communities : As of June 30, 2026, the credit union sector reported:

• 40.13 billion gourdes in total assets;

• 32.60 billion gourdes in deposits;

• 20.19 billion gourdes in net loans.

Despite economic and security-related challenges, credit unions continue to mobilize savings and finance the needs of their members.

3 - Over 1.5 Million Members : As of June 30, 2026, credit unions had more than 1.5 million members (1,520,094), including 50,185 borrowers.

Among these borrowers, 49,380 are individuals, 19,535 of whom are women (39.6%). These loans address concrete needs : developing a business, covering tuition or healthcare costs, or purchasing agricultural inputs.

4 - Members participate in decision-making : Members also play an active role in the governance of their credit union (one member, one vote). During General Meetings, they elect leadership, review annual reports, and take part in decision-making. This involvement fosters responsible and transparent management.

5 - Robust governance to remain a trusted point of reference : Remaining a reliable pillar for communities depends on the ability of credit unions (CECs) to manage their risks and maintain their services. BRH Circular No. 10, dated October 9, 2024, provides a framework for their sound governance.

Oversight, transparency, and operational continuity help preserve member trust and provide long-term support for financial inclusion.
