Haiti - FLASH : Important message from the Ministry of Health

Faced with the resurgence of Mpox cases (formerly known as "monkeypox") worldwide (more than 120 countries have reported cases of Mpox between January 2022 and August 2024, with more than 100,000 laboratory-confirmed cases), the World Health Organization (WHO) considers this disease a public health emergency, the highest level of alert.

Consequently, Dr. Georges Fils Brignol, Minister of Public Health, in the interest of transparency, shares the following information for a better understanding by the population of this new health issue,

"1. To date, no cases of monkeypox (Mpox) have been reported in Haiti. However, it is essential that we remain well informed and prepared to protect our population;

2. Monkeypox (MPox) is a viral disease that is transmitted primarily through close contact with an infected person, whether through broken skin, bodily fluids, or respiratory droplets [either through direct contact with infected animals or indirectly through contaminated materials (such as bedding or surfaces)];

3. Symptoms of monkeypox (MPox) include fever, headache, muscle aches, and rash [incubation period of 12 days];

4. Although the disease is rare, it can affect anyone. That is why we must all be aware of the risks and know how to protect ourselves;

5. Prevention is our best weapon against monkeypox (MPox). We must all ensure that we adopt rigorous hygiene practices, avoid close contact with sick people, and follow the recommendations of health authorities;"

The Minister also wishes to reassure you that he is closely monitoring the situation globally and regionally, and is working on the necessary measures to prevent the outbreak of this disease in Haiti.

The Ministry has strengthened epidemiological surveillance to detect possible cases of this disease early. In this regard, instructions have been sent to the competent services at the central and departmental levels to apply the appropriate protocols in the presence of suspected, probable and/or confirmed cases.

The Minister encourages you to stay informed and follow the advice of the national health authority that is the Ministry.

Let's adopt rigorous hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with people with suspicious symptoms.

"Together, by remaining vigilant and cooperating, we can continue to protect our nation from this disease. Let's be united and supportive to preserve everyone's health !"
