Haiti - Health : More than 30% of the rural population still practices open defecation

This week as the world celebrated World Toilet Day (November 19, 2023), attention was focused on a crucial global issue : access to safe and sustainable sanitation facilities.

In Haiti, more than 30% of the rural population still practiced open defecation (World Bank statistics 2020) and only 31% have access to improved sanitation facilities that are not shared with other families (Source Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development 2020).

Sanitation system challenges include inconsistent and inadequate facilities and services.

Only 58% of domestic wastewater is treated safely before being released into the environment, polluting drinking water and ecosystems. Investing in toilets will help create a safer and more sustainable future.

On the occasion of this World Day, the SANIFIN project organized discussions in Cap-Haïtien with the main stakeholders in the region's value chain, to better understand the context and think about solutions.

Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), SANIFIN is a 5-year project that will leverage innovative financing, technologies and collaboration with key stakeholders as it works to meet the sanitation needs of 85,000 people in Haiti.
