Haiti - Environment : Towards the start of production of a thousand «Garden of Abundance»

On August 6, Abner Septembre, the Minister of the Environment, in the presence of his Director General, Astrel Joseph, his Chief of Staff Mrs. Régine Abraham and other executives of the institution proceeded to the signing of contracts with several ecological organizations and associations, as part of the Support Project for Partners for the Restoration of Ecosystems via the "Jardin Garde-Manger de l'Abondance" (JGMA) (Garden of Abundance)

This Project will be implemented in collaboration with the partners of the Ministry, ecological organizations and associations which have already proved their worth in the sector and especially in the peasant environment, including the National Association of Fruit Processors (ANATRAF); National Network of Promoters of Solidarity Tourism (RENAPROTS); Elvecina Saint-Martin Foundation (FESMAR); the Haitian Center for the Promotion of Agriculture and the Protection of the Environment (CEPHAPE); Promotion and Development (PROMODEV); the Association of Peasants of Vallue (APV); Ste Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Macaya Foundation

In his intervention, Minister Septembre specified that the "JGMA (launched on July 15, 2020 https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-31285-icihaiti-social-launch-of-the-pilot-project-garden-pantry-of-plenty.html ) is not really Agriculture, but rather a tool which aims to "make small farms more productive than the traditional gardens of the peasant, more economical in work and attractive to young people and women, while being environmentally friendly. These gardens will be able to provide year round natural products for domestic and commercial needs." This type of garden designed by the Center Banyen - Jardin Labo (in Vallue), tends to reduce the pressure of communities on natural resources, by promoting environmental regeneration in general and the conservation of biological diversity in particular, explained the Minister.

Funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Support Project for Partners for Ecosystem Restoration via the "Jardin Garde-Manger de l'Abondance" "aims to put into production from January to December 2021, approximately one a thousand JGMA for a thousand families" (± 5,000 people on average).

The pilot phase scheduled from July to December 2020 will serve as a training venue for families, an internship for students from partner universities and for the popularization of this new paradigm and the promotion of agritourism.
