Haiti - Environment : Haiti Youth Conference on Climate Change
Friday at the campus of the University Henri Christophe in Limonade, ended the Haiti Youth Conference on Climate Change (COY13-Haiti). This conference was a rich forum for exchanging knowledge and experiences among young people on the climate, which will feed the work of the international conference of young COY13 from 2 to 4 November in Bonn in Germany as a prelude to the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23).
The Ministry of the Environment, the Delegation of the European Union and the United Nations Development Program in Haiti say they are ready to commit themselves to the youth of Haiti in their dynamism for the climate. Speaking on the occasion, Pierre Simon Georges, the Minister of the Environment, made a strong appeal to all young people in the country to become more involved in this joint fight against climate change "Young people represent more than half of our population. They are the driving force behind the transition to sustainable development, low carbon and resilient to the impacts of climate change, provided that they serve the country with enthusiasm and optimism. The Ministry of Environment is working tirelessly to provide them with the necessary framework for active participation in environmental management," said the Minister.
In addition, the European Union Ambassador in Haiti said that with an environment of extreme fragility, of vulnerability of the population and a low capacity for adaptation, Haiti is highly exposed to climate risks. "The frequency and violence that the meteorological hazards that afflict the country, demonstrate the urgency to address this issue through adequate public policies and innovative alternatives to manage the available natural resources as well as increase the resilience of the country population [...] youth is an invaluable source of gray matter that can and should be put at the service of thinking about the many issues faced by the country, including environmental issues and more particularly, climate change."
