Haiti - Environment : Bamboo against the devastating impacts of water
The Organization for the Rehabilitation of the Environment (ORE) has set up and operates a bamboo nursery in Port Salut, a plant intended to stabilize the banks of this zone and to avoid, among other things that the beach of Point Sable and populations living in the coastal areas of Port Salut, record damage during intense rainfall events.
Indeed, when the ravines overflow, they commit considerable damage in community. The waters carry not only the Arab layers of the soil but also discharge sediments into the sea "This situation also has negative effects on the beach of Pointe Sable, the quality of the water of the sea and the species that live there," explained Bernardin Jean Wilber, an employee of the Departmental directorate of the Ministry of the Environment, affirming that this initiative represents a good
step in the dynamics of environmental protection in this zone.
"These bamboos will be planted in the banks of the gullies to mitigate the devastating impacts of the waters," said agronomist Thys Jean Elie, Coordinator of Terrestrial Ecosystems at UN Environment/Haiti.
It should be noted that this bamboo nursery, like others already operating in the Port-Salut area, is financed by UN Environment from a fund of the Government of Norway.
