Haiti - Environment : SMCRS wants to get out the metropolitan area of its insalubrity...

Tuesday at the Primature, Donald Parison, the Director General of the Department of Metropolitan Solid Waste Collection (SMCRS), presented the new plan of action to put an end to the state of insalubrity of the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince.

1,500 jobs will be created as part of this plan which aims the sanitation in the short term of 8 municipalities which include: Kenscoff, Petion-Ville, Port-au-Prince, Delmas, la Saline...

The proliferation of small markets and the low investment by the private sector of waste management, would be inter alia according to Donald Parison, the cause of rejection in the streets of more than 80% of household waste by households.

He stressed that the success of this plan involved the full cooperation of municipalities concerned. Distribution of free bins, waste collection door to door 3 times a week (for household in good standing with their municipality) and collection at fixed predetermined locations, removal of illegal dumping are among some of the other measures contained in the Action Plan, which does not have a fixed term.

Donald Parison indicated that SMCRS intends to continue its activities until the metropolitan area get out its insalubrity.
