Haiti - Religion : Mgr François Wolff passed away

The President Michel Martelly is deeply saddened by the death of the Archbishop Emeritus of Port-au-Prince, Mgr François Wolff Ligondé, occurred this Monday, April 8 at the age of 85 years.

"Mgr Ligondé throughout his ecclesiastical career, has always was a humanist and philanthropist extraordinary. His homilies, inspired of the holy scriptures and well adapted to the Haitian realities, have accompanied several generations of Catholic believers in their spiritual quest.

On behalf of the Executive and the Haitian people, the Head of State expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the famous Archbishop of Port-au-Prince (1966-2008), who has devoted more than forty years of his life, to defend with ardor the cardinal values ​​and contribute to the emergence of a Haitian society more just and equitable."

Born 17 January 1928 in Les Cayes, he was ordained priest on 11 July 1954 by Mgr Rémy Augustin, first Haitian Bishop. He was appointed Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, by His Holiness Pope Paul VI, August 20, 1966 and assumed his office for more than 40 years before retiring on March 1, 2008, at the age of 80 years.
