Haiti - Communication : Freedom of the press, Haiti 49th out of 176

In the latest global rankings on the freedom of the press, carried out by the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) for the year 2013, Haiti won 3 places and occupies the 49th position out of 179 countries, far ahead of the Dominican Republic, ranked 80th position, however, our neighbor, progresses more rapidly, gaining 15 places this year.

"The Dominican Republic rose 15 places to 80th because of a decline in violence against journalists and legal proceedings that threaten freedom of information. But it is still far behind its neighbour Haiti (49th), where the situation is still largely unchanged although some journalists have accused President Michel Martelly of hostility towards them," indicates RSF in its report 2013.

In a statement, Ms. Régine Godfrey, Minister of Communications, on behalf of the Government welcomes the progress of Haiti and reiterated the firm commitment of the Government to guarantee these achievements, which are essential for the proper functioning of democracy and the rule of law and promises to continue to work for the respect of right to information and freedom of expression of everyone and to improve relations between the state and the press.
