Haiti - Social : Struggle against high prices, Laurent Lamothe gives explanations...

Following the formation Friday of a price stabilization Commission composed of representatives of the Primature, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, explained "[...] it is a point that is highly sensitive for the population, we had several meetings with the private sector, importers of rice... [...] But one thing is clear, the vulnerability in which the population is today, the last thing we need is an exorbitant increase in the price of basic products, I am talking of rice, corn, beans, flour...

Our role as a responsible government, is to see what happens, to organize ourselves in a Commission of struggle against high prices within the Government, and the Commission will begin work on Saturday 9:00 am.

Until Wednesday we will meet various actors of the national life, peasant associations, grassroots associations, small merchant, we will receive the big and small importers, also of distributors and retailers, so that they come submit their ideas and convictions.

[...] the rice will arrive within one to two weeks. The Commission is composed of myself, of Wilson Laleau, Minister of Trade and Industry, Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, Marie Carmelle Jean Marie, Minister of Finance, the Director General of the Bureau of Monetization, who made the order of the 300,000 bags of rice, the Director of the National Coordination for Food Security, the President of Council of Economic and Social Development and some adviser of the Primature [...]

By the end of next week, the Government will come with a joint decision of all the parties, for to come with a response that will have three components : a response to short-term, so immediately that will affected the price of rice, a medium-term response and long-term response. This is not a blitz that we must do, but an operation that encompasses these three responses and a sustainable decision..."
