Haiti - La Paix University Hospital : New state-of-the-art surgical imaging equipment

La Paix University Hospital (HUP) now possesses a state-of-the-art C-arm surgical imaging system, designed to enhance the quality and safety of surgical procedures, particularly in the management of emergencies and trauma cases.

On Tuesday, November 3rd, 2026, a signing ceremony formalizing the donation of this equipment took place at HUP. The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), Dr. Jean Philippe Lerbourg Medical Director of the hospital, and Dr. Oscar Barreneche Representative of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization—PAHO/WHO in Haiti.

At a time when many healthcare facilities in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area have closed their doors or are operating at reduced capacity due to insecurity, HUP remains the last major public hospital that is fully operational and capable of handling emergencies and managing mass-casualty situations.

Installed in the operating room, the C-arm provides surgical teams with real-time radiological imaging during procedures. This will help improve the precision of surgical interventions, enhance patient safety, and support the management of trauma, including injuries resulting from armed violence and road traffic accidents.

This initiative led by the MSPP as part of the operations of the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), with technical support from PAHO/WHO and funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) underscores the importance of partnerships in strengthening healthcare services in Haiti.

Learn more about the C-Arm surgical imaging system :

The C-Arm surgical imaging system is a state-of-the-art mobile X-ray unit that has revolutionized modern surgery. Its design allows the device to be rotated and positioned around the patient, eliminating the need for constant patient repositioning. Its primary advantage is the ability to provide high-resolution, real-time X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy) directly within the operating room. Surgeons can instantly view the precise location of their instruments, implants (such as screws or plates) or catheters inside the patient’s body on a screen. Offering millimeter-level precision, this equipment is particularly vital in orthopedics (for fracture alignment and the placement of prostheses), neurosurgery (involving the spine), and vascular surgery. Real-time monitoring during a procedure enables the immediate correction of any alignment or placement issues before the incision is closed.
