Dressed in a male costume, with a rifle in hand and a sabre attached to her waist, she participated directly in the fierce battles against the French troops commanded by General Leclerc.

Marie-Jeanne not only cared for the many wounded on the ground; she revived the morale of Haitian soldiers, distributed gunpowder and fought in the front row of the ramparts with spectacular audacity.

Her strength of character, legendary recklessness and absolute dedication to the cause of freedom have made her a true icon of Haitian national resistance.
