The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has called on the United Nations Security Council to extend the mandate of the Gang Supression Force (GSF) in Haiti, as the country prepares to hold elections.

In a statement to the UN Security Council, CARICOM indicated that, given the FRG's incomplete deployment (currently less than 20% of its force) and the scheduled expiration of its mandate at the end of September 2026, "Renewing the mandate remains a critical safeguard against a further deterioration of the security situation, as well as the risk of widespread instability and anarchy," CARICOM stated.

It is worth recalling that the FRG is a multinational security mission, ultimately comprising 5,550 troops, supported by the UN and authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 2793 (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45891-haiti-flash-the-security-council-has-voted-for-the-new-gang-repression-force.html), to neutralize armed groups controlling a large part of the capital, Port-au-Prince. It operates in coordination with the Haitian National Police to secure critical infrastructure and protect civilians.

It was created to replace the smaller and underfunded Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM), led by Kenya.

In its statement, read by a Jamaican diplomat, CARICOM indicated that it welcomed the encouraging signs of progress in Haiti and reaffirmed its deep concern regarding the multidimensional security crisis affecting the country.

CARICOM stated that, despite some gradual improvements, the overall situation remains critical.

CARICOM commends the efforts undertaken by the Government of the Republic of Haiti, with the support of key bilateral, regional, and multilateral partners, including CARICOM, the United Nations, and the Organization of American States (OAS), to lay the groundwork for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

"Despite these challenges, CARICOM considers that the holding of elections remains a priority, underscoring our continued commitment to Haiti’s long-term stability, democratic governance and constitutional order."

CARICOM stated that regional leaders reaffirmed their commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to address the ongoing needs of the Haitian people and the modest improvements observed on the ground.

It expressed particular concern about the worsening humanitarian situation affecting Haiti’s most vulnerable populations, including women, girls, and youth.

CARICOM encourages sustained international cooperation and support to address the current crisis in Haiti and calls for an acceleration of stabilization efforts, including increased humanitarian funding and the full deployment of the GSF. "We urge the financial community to deepen its engagement with the government of Haiti and other key stakeholders in pursuit of a stable, secure and democratic future for the Haitian people. Haiti deserves a future of peace, prosperity and democratic governance, a future deserving of every citizen in every country."
