Haiti - Economy : Bank credit to the private sector shows a slight increase of 0.3% after 2 years of contraction 10/07/2026 09:23:42
The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) has just published its new report on bank credit to the private sector. This analysis examines the evolution of bank credit between September 2024 and September 2025. The net loan portfolio grew by only 0.3% in 2025, following two consecutive years of contraction (-15.2% in 2024 and -9.6% in 2023). Banks maintained a cautious stance in the face of rising risks and a deteriorating business climate, while the non-performing loan rate averaged 13% over the period [compared to 10.36% during the previous fiscal year (2023-2024)]. The report also highlights the high concentration of credit in certain sectors and regions of the country, disparities in access to financing based on gender, and the measures implemented by the BRH (Central Bank of Haiti) to support borrowers in difficulty and productive sectors. Excerpts from the BRH report : "[...] The housing sector and industrial free zones remain the main beneficiaries, mobilizing 5.269 billion gourdes (MG) and 5.082 billion gourdes respectively, representing 26.6% and 25.7% of the funds allocated. Next come export-oriented companies, which received a total of 3.212 MG in financing, equivalent to 16.2% of total disbursements, and the tourism and hotel sectors, which received 2.440 MG, or 12.3% of the portfolio allocated under this program. The agricultural sector, supported by the provisions of Circular 113, and the Real Estate Development Promotion Program (PPDI), respectively, received 11.9% and 5.3% of the disbursements. Finally, financial companies operating in leasing received 400 million gourdes, representing 2% of the total allocation. At the end of fiscal year 2025, bank credit to the private sector recorded a slight increase of 0.3%, after two years of contraction. This growth occurred within a context marked by the prolonged deterioration of the business climate in Haiti, exacerbated by a security crisis that has persisted for more than five years. [...] Faced with this situation, the improvement of security conditions appears to be a prerequisite for restoring investor confidence, reviving productive activities, and reactivating traditional credit distribution channels. This return to stability will also lay the foundations for an environment conducive to financial innovation. Beyond security concerns, the development of a financial risk management ecosystem is also becoming crucial.
