"Did you know that this ball game, called batey, was not simply a pastime for the Taíno, but a ritual and sacred ball game of great social importance ?

This game took place on a rectangular central square, also called batey, which was demarcated by large flat stones erected and often engraved with petroglyphs. Two teams competed by hitting a ball made of vegetable rubber or bouncy resin.

The main rule prohibited the use of hands and feet; players had to keep the ball moving using only their hips, elbows, shoulders or knees protected by stone or wooden belts.

The game of batey was often used to settle peaceful conflicts between different chiefdoms or to honor the gods during major festivities, sometimes ending with solemn religious ceremonies.
