Tribute to President Jovenel Moïse

A ceremony commemorating the 5th anniversary of President Jovenel Moïse's death on July 7, 2021 (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.html) was held this Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Villa d’Accueil in Port-au-Prince. The event, organized at the initiative of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, brought together members of the government, the Secretary General of the Presidency, the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, as well as representatives of the High Command of the Haitian National Police (PNH) and the High Command of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H).

At the heart of the commemoration, a requiem mass was celebrated by Reverend Father Jean Robert Louis. In his homily, he reminded those present that "death is the beginning of a new life," affirming that the former President had returned to God. He took the opportunity to urge the faithful to remain vigilant, emphasizing that death "has neither day nor date."

The ceremony continued with the sounding of the Last Post, before concluding in a moment of quiet reflection.

Beyond the ritual, this commemoration reflects the Haitian authorities' commitment to preserving the memory of Jovenel Moïse, whose assassination remains a deep wound in the country's recent history.

Messages :

Former First Lady of Haiti Martine Moïse (video):

Former First Lady Martine Moïse recorded a video message to mark 60 months since the assassination of her late husband, President Jovenel Moïse. We invite you to share it.

Bocchit EDMOND, former Ambassador and former Minister of Foreign Affairs :

"Five years ago, on the night of July 7, 2021, assassin's bullets ended the life of President Jovenel Moïse, taking with him a man, a leader, a vision for Haiti." https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.html . Five years later, the wound remains open, painful, and resistant to time. Some wounds never heal; they simply remind us of what we have lost.

I had the distinct honor of serving alongside him, first as Minister of Foreign Affairs, then as Haiti's Ambassador to the United States and to the Organization of American States. These positions offered me a privileged glimpse into the man he truly was, far removed from caricatures and controversies, and close to his deepest convictions. Jovenel Moïse believed in Haiti. Not from a naive or blind faith, but from a conviction rooted in his origins, in his peasant roots in the North, in his profound understanding of his people's suffering. He knew where he came from. And that is precisely why he knew where he wanted to go.

He had concrete plans : the electrification of the country, the development of agriculture, the modernization of the state, the economic sovereignty of a nation that had been dependent for too long. He wanted to break the chains that others had learned to wear like ornaments. He wanted to disrupt an established order that thrived on Haiti's stagnation, and that, perhaps, was his greatest failing in the eyes of some.

He was misunderstood, or rather—and history will be able to distinguish between the two—he was deliberately misunderstood by those whom his ambition for the country disturbed. No man is perfect; President Moïse knew this better than anyone. But perfection has never been a prerequisite for courage. And he had the courage to act. Today, as Haiti goes through one of the darkest periods in its contemporary history, I cannot help but feel the void left by his passing. An institutional void, certainly, but above all a human one—the void left by a man who, in all our meetings, in all our sometimes tense discussions about world affairs and our country, never lost sight of what was essential : the well-being of the Haitian people.

His assassination remains a crime against the entire nation. That it be fully solved, that those who ordered it be held accountable before the law—this is a moral imperative, a debt we owe to his memory, to his family, and to history.

On this fifth anniversary, I bow with respect and sorrow before the memory of President Jovenel Moïse. I am thinking of Mrs. Martine Moïse, her children, and her family, who bear the weight of a loss that words cannot console every day.

Mr. President, you loved Haiti. You wanted to give it a better future. History, written not by weapons but by truth, will bring you the justice your assassins thought they could deny you.

Honor and respect to your memory."

Moïse Jean Charles, former Senator for the North Department :

"Today, July 7, 2026, marks exactly five years since an international conspiracy, with the complicity of local criminals, infiltrated the home of the sitting President, Jovenel Moïse, to cowardly assassinate him in his bedroom. This act wounded the dignity of the Nation and plunged the country into the great maelstrom of insecurity and institutional destabilization that society continues to suffer to this day.

During these five years, justice has remained a major unanswered question, because the judicial system is weak and puppet governments continue to suppress the truth to protect their masters.

On behalf of Pitit Dessalines, I want to remind everyone: there can be no lasting stability without true and complete justice and without the truth being revealed about this major state crime.

As leaders, we declare: A true leader fights for justice and the dignity of their people; they never use assassination as a means to wage their battle. When one kills to advance a cause, one ceases to be a liberator and becomes a criminal.

While honoring the memory of President Jovenel Moïse and his family today, we reaffirm that only by respecting and implementing Article 149 of the Constitution, establishing a dual executive, implementing the National Security Strategic Plan (NSSP), and organizing the Sovereign National Conference, can we rebuild a strong state that guarantees security, justice, and respect for the rights of all citizens.

No stability without justice ! Respect for the memory of the Nation !"
