Haiti - Education : The CONATEL gives figures on levies on incoming calls

Jean Marie Guillaume, Director General of the National Telecommunications Council (CONATEL), by sake of transparency, believes it appropriate to inform the public about the availability relating to the contribution of surplus tariff on incoming calls in the country in accordance with the laws and especially the clauses of concession contracts, between the Haitian and telephone operators.

As a reminder, this perception is intended to finance the universal education program of the Government. Financial resources, collected, together with partners of telephony, are intended to finance school compulsory and free for the most disadvantaged in Haiti.

Thus, the CONATEL announces that from June 16 to November 30, 2011, it has already collected, of Digicel and of Comcel/Voilà, an amount of 4,897,558.26) U.S. dollars and 336,159,069.13 in local currency [gourd]. This makes a total of US$13,116,606.40, calculated using the reference rate of 40.90 gourdes for one dollar, by the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH).

This revenue, fueled by only the two largest operators, are available on the account of CONATEL and will be transferred to the Treasury, once the authorities concerned will produce demand. The CONATEL plans to periodically publish information that are of public interest and hopes relies on the understanding of all.
