Haiti - Taiwan : Dredging irrigation canals for abundant rice harvests

In the Les Cayes plain, rice production depends on a stable and efficient irrigation system. However, sediment accumulation and invasive vegetation have clogged the canals, reducing water flow and leaving the rice fields dry. To restore efficient irrigation and ensure that the rice fields receive sufficient water throughout their growing cycle, the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Haiti partnered with local farmers' organizations.

The Taiwan Technical Mission, in collaboration with the Dutriche Community Farmers' Association, mobilized local rice farmers to dredge the community canals. Through structured meetings and coordinated planning, the TTM helped the rice farmers develop a comprehensive dredging plan and a strategy for equitable irrigation water distribution. These efforts not only ensured equitable water distribution and improved irrigation efficiency, but also strengthened community collaboration and unity.

With professional guidance from the TTM, rice farmers learned practical techniques for removing sediment, weeding, and repairing damaged sections of the canal. The result ? Improved water flow, healthier rice crops, and better irrigation management. In addition, the rice farmers acquired essential skills for sustainable water resource management and are now engaged in long-term maintenance planning and working to develop a cooperative framework to maintain the efficiency of irrigation systems.

Dredging canals is an essential component of sustainable agriculture, and only regular maintenance allows irrigation systems to remain functional and efficient. The success of this initiative underscores the impact of teamwork and expert guidance.
