Haiti - FLASH : The DHS does not currently intend to redesignate Haiti for TPS

Thursday, April 4th, 2024, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas advised Haitians to avoid traveling by sea illegally to the United States "Let me be clear that, when we interdict individuals from Haiti at sea, we return them to Haiti as quickly as possible. In fact, we have done so in recent weeks, and we will continue to do so. We continue to enforce the law."

Furthermore, Alejandro Mayorkasa declared that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had "[...] any plans at this time to redesignate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status" which allowed Haitian nationals currently residing in the United States to live and work due to unsafe conditions in their country. Let's remember that the current TPS extension and designation ends on August 3rd, 2024.

"Our message to Haitians is quite clear: Do not take to the seas. We have seen too much tragedy when people imperil their lives, the lives of their loved ones," recalling "We have lawful, safe, and orderly pathways for individuals who qualify for relief in the United States to arrive here." More than 151,000 Haitians have been legally admitted to the United States under the two-year conditional program that the Biden administration launched in January 2023, without the we know what would happen to the immigration status of these people once the 2 years have passed...
