Haiti - Insecurity : 10,000 people displaced in one week to escape gangs

The latest report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM - Haiti) reveals that following attacks in the municipalities of Cité Soleil, Tabarre La Grenade, Rivière-Froide and the neighborhoods bordering these municipalities: Terre-Blanche, Terre-Noire, Blanchard, Duvivie, 10,000 have moved in one week to escape gang violence.

Around 60% took refuge with relatives in host families, and around 40% (an increase) settled in sites such as schools, churches, or other open spaces "These are 13 sites at total including 10 new ones which welcomed nearly 4,000 new people.

"According to the latest IOM assessment, there were a total of 314,000 displaced people in Haiti at the end of 2023. Among these people, around 30% found refuge in 81 sites whose living conditions are precarious in terms of hygiene and sanitation, access to shelters to protect themselves from bad weather, as well as access to water.

The IOM emphasizes that more and more people are taking refuge in sites, due to the lack of resources of host families to accommodate refugees for a relatively long period.
