Haiti - Politic : Billions for social protection

On Wednesday January 18, 2023, the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry, chaired an important working meeting aimed at strengthening the document of the sectoral sub-programme to support food and nutritional security set up by the Government through the Ministry of Agriculture https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38551-haiti-politic-launch-of-the-food-security-sector-program-video-speech-pm.html

This program responds to the population's urgent food security needs. The Head of Government says he hopes that this project will have a multiplier effect and a considerable impact on the entire population.

Improve the availability of local agri-food products in the short term; facilitating sufficient quantity and quality of products to households by opening up rural roads over a period of 8 months constitute, among other things, the objectives of this sub-programme. It will be implemented through two major components: the strengthening of the strategic food security sector by favoring direct support for the production of short-cycle crops and animals, as well as the rapid creation of jobs in the maintenance of irrigation, the rehabilitation of agricultural tracks and the protection of watersheds.

Through this sub-programme, the Government also intends to develop a series of labour-intensive activities in the targeted areas. Nearly 175,000 people will be directly affected and 96,500 jobs will be created over a period ranging from 40 to 45 days throughout the duration of the program which will be financed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the Public Treasury, up to more than 5.2 billion Gourdes (5,214,700,000 Gourdes).

The Prime Minister is convinced that it is really urgent that all actors in the chain agree to reduce food insecurity and to act within the framework of social promotion and protection.
