Haiti - Prisons : Haiti, has the smallest number of prisoners !

Haiti is the Caribbean countries where there are the smallest number of prisoners, this is what we learned in the ninth study entitled "World Prison Population List" covering 218 countries and independent territories published this Thursday, July 21 by the International Centre for Prison Studies, a partner of the University of Essex.

According to this study on the date of December 31, 2010 the prison population in Haiti was 5.331, or 55 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, the lowest rate in the Caribbean ! Our neighbor, the Dominican Republic counts 21.050 prisoners, 213 per 100.000. The palm at the level of the Caribbean region is owned by the Virgin Islands (U.S.) with 539 per 100.000. While to the United States the figure rises to 743 people per 100,000, a total of 2,292,133 behind bars !

Always according to the same study, in Haiti, 67.7% of the prison population are Pre-trial detainees / remand prisoners [often for years], 8.6% are female prisoners, 3.9% are juveniles / minors / young prisoners [they are often detained with adults]. It is also indicated that there are 18 prisons in the country and that three prisons are inoperative since June 2010 following the January 12, 2010 and that the capacity of the prison system is 2.448 (on the date of March 2009).
