Haiti - Economy : Haitian companies face the competition

The Ministry of Trade and Industry organized this week at the Marriott Hotel, jointly with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a two-day workshop for executives from different ministries as well as members of the Private Sector, led by two international experts Ms. Velia Govaere Vicario and Mario Umana, on competition and protection measures, to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry as part of the establishment of a structure facilitating competition in Haiti

In his speech, Minister Ronell Gilles stressed the importance of such a workshop not only for the Ministry but also for the Private Sector Business saying "Our companies can not become competitive at the local, regional and international levels, increase their exports or to defend against the massive importation of goods of lesser quality than if they know how to respect the competitive rules."

Adding that it was important to provide Haiti with strong economic defense measures that would protect jobs and domestic production against dumping.

Rafael Julia, the IDB's representative in Haiti, who opened the workshop, noted that the lack of competition legislation was the reason for the lack of enthusiasm for investment in the country.
