In the latest Human Development Indicators and Indicators (HDI): Statistical Update 2018 report prepared by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Haiti is ranked 168th out of 189 countries and territories in the world using the most most recent for 2017 and last of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, classified in the category "weak human development" (only Caribbean country placed in this category) with an index of 0.498 out of 1. Note that the closer the value is to 1, the higher the country's level of development.

In the Caribbean zone, Cuba 73e (0.777), the Dominican Republic 94th (0.736) and Jamaica 97th (0.732) is well ahead of Haiti and are classified in the category "high human development" in the same way as Mexico (74th), the Venezuela (78th), Brazil (79th), China (86th) and Colombia (90th).

According to the update of this index life expectancy in Haiti is 63.6 years against 79.9 in Cuba, 76.1 in Jamaica and 74 in the Dominican Republic while Haiti's gross national income per capita is $ 1.665 against 7.524 dollars for Cuba, 7.846 for Jamaica and 13.921 for the Dominican Republic.

In the Latin America Region, Chile ranks 44th in the world (0.843) and Argentina 47th (0.825)

1st - Norway (0.953);

2nd - Switzerland (0.944);

3rd - Australia (0.939);

4th - Ireland (0.938);

5th - Germany (0.936).

Top 5 countries with the lowest human development index :

185th - Burundi (0.417);

186th - Chad (0.404);

187th - South Sudan (0.388);

188th - Central African Republic (0,367)

189th and last - Niger (0.354).

The Human Development Index aims to measure the level of development of countries and takes into account economic data (GDP) 3 series of more qualitative data :

1 - Health : (mesurée par l’espérance de vie)

Permet d’évaluer indirectement la satisfaction des besoins matériels essentiels tels que l’accès à une alimentation saine, à l’eau potable, à un logement décent, à une bonne hygiène et aux soins médicaux.

2 - Level of education :

Average duration of schooling for adults over 25 and expected length of schooling for school-aged children. It reflects the satisfaction of intangible needs such as the ability to participate in decision-making at the workplace or in society.

3 - Quality of life : (logarithm of gross per capita income in purchasing power parity)

Allows to include elements of the quality of life that are not described by the first two indices such as mobility or access to culture.
