Haiti - Culture : Two Haitian filmmakers honored at the 22nd FESPACO

Haitian filmmaker Arnold Antonin has received the price Paul Robeson for his film "Les amours d'un zombi" at the 22nd Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) (1). This prize rewards the best film of the African Diaspora.

This is the third film of the filmmaker to be rewarded as part of this great festival of African film, after "Le président a t-il le Sida ?", and "Jacques Roumain, la passion d'un pays". While receiving the prize, Arnold Antonin stressed that his film wants to be "a denunciation of the demagogues and at the same time the affirmation that the Haitian people will not agree to forever play the role of zombie that one wants impose on it".

Moreover, the Haitian filmmaker, Raoul Peck, received a special mention for his film "Molock Tropical", filmed in the walls of the Citadelle Laferrière. Minister of Culture and Communication from 1995 to 1997, Raoul Peck has to his credit several films including "L'Homme sur les quais", "Sometimes in April" and "LUMUMBA", a film inspired by the political life of Patrice Lumumba and his role in the independence of Congo.

The author of "Molock Tropical" holds several prestigious awards, including those of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, France; Knight of the Order "Honor and Merit", Haiti. he Haitian filmmaker is the current president of the prestigious European Foundation of Image and Sound Professions (FEMIS).

(1) The 22nd FESPACO was held in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso between February 26 and March 5. 110 films were selected and this is a Moroccan film who won the award for best film.
