Haiti - Training : Seminar on corruption and money laundering

Thursday, Michel-Ange Gédéon the Director General of the National Police of Haiti opened a two-day seminar for the benefit of members of the institution, on "money laundering and corruption."

In his opening remarks Gédéon spoke about Transparency International's latest report on corruption https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23641-haiti-corruption-haiti-ranked-157th-out-of-180-countries-progresses-slightly.html

"I read on social networks comments on Transparency International's latest report on the index of corruption in the world. Once again, our country occupies a place that does not honor Haitians. The last of America, Haiti is ranked among the 25 most corrupt countries on the planet. That worries me a lot [...]

I made reflections with my close collaborators well before this report and I concluded that the PNH must sensitize its members on these two scourges. Some will say that they do not know anything about what is called money laundering or corruption [...] Despite the multiplicity of legal norms, no one can invoke the ignorance of standards to escape a sanction [...] it is not because we would have ignored the definition of the themes of the day that we could not indulge in these ignoble and infamous practices.

[...] It is also to say stop there to those who would have indulged in these practices in secret or who plan to do it [...] It is the step of the good father who forms, informs and provides advice before taking action with rigor and firmness.

Through this activity of learning and reflection, the PNH, intends to warn all staff of any unorthodox practice that may hinder the institution in its march towards professionalism in connection with the irreproachable honesty we want for all its members [...]"

Recall that the PNH is engaged in a fight against corruption and money laundering including with zombies checks, that is to say by cashing the payment of wages made to staff who have resigned, abandoned their position, absent or deceased . For the last 3 months only, audits and investigations have allowed the PNH to recover nearly 50 million Gourdes in zombie checks on the approximately 19,000 salary checks issued each month to police and administrative staff https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23412-haiti-economy-the-pnh-tracks-zombies-checks-and-recovers-millions.html
