Haiti - TPS : «We will not permit Trump to trample the rights of Haitians» dixit Sénateur Hamilton

Democrat Senator Jesse Hamilton, who represents the 20th Senate District of downtown Brooklyn, New York, joined the already numerous voices of politicians, community organizations and individuals who denounce the Trump Administration's decision to end to the designation of the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22759-haiti-flash-tps-more-than-50-000-haitians-will-have-to-leave-the-usa.html .

Remember that to allow an orderly transition, the effective date of the termination of the TPS is July 22, 2019. A period of 18 months to allow time for Haitians benefiting from the TPS o organize their departure or to seek a other legal immigration status in the United States, if they qualify. It will also enable Haiti to prepare for the return and reintegration of its citizens, nearly 60,000 of whom are affected by this decision.

Reacting to this decision, Senator Jesse Hamilton stated "I stand in resolute opposition to the Trump administration's disgraceful decision to target yet another vulnerable population for inhumane mistreatment by withdrawing Temporary Protected Status from 59,000 Haitians," adding "Haiti is still rebuilding in the wake of natural disasters that have killed hundreds of thousands and displaced more than 1.5 million people in recent years. In our country, that would be something akin to 45 million Americans displaced."

"Granting temporary protected status to 59,000 Haitians is incredibly important to them and their US-born, US-citizen children but also important to the capacity of Haiti itself to continue rebuilding."

"The Trump administration's decision to withdraw this status fails to recognise the situation on the ground in Haiti, wrenches families, and stunts Haiti's ability to rebuild with help sent from TPS recipients [...] This unjust policy disregards our humanitarian obligations, perversely, at a time when the spirit of generosity and compassion should be especially fresh in our minds."

Senator Hamilton indicated that his office would continue to be a "sanctuary Senate office, connecting immigrants to resources like free legal representation," affirming "I will stand with colleagues, advocates, and New Yorkers of good conscience across our State [...] We will not permit Trump to trample the rights of our friends and neighbours."
