This Saturday, April 21, as part of the project « Feed the Future Haïti Chanje Lavi Plantè » of the American Agency for International Development (USAID - Haiti) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of the Environment, USAID is launching a large seedling transplanting operation on Reforestation Day in Robin (Kenscoff commune).

The preservation of the environment and soil conservation are key pillars of all the activities of the project "Chanje Lavi Plantè" in the watersheds areas where the project operates. In collaboration with 8 Management Committees of Sub-Watershed (CGSBV), organizations of farmers and local officials, "Chanje Lavi Plantè" begins transplanting a million seedlings of fruit and forest trees found in 40 nurseries in the communes of Kenscoff and the Croix-des-Bouquets.

Two million additional seedlings will be planted by September 2017. The location for transplanting seedlings is identified in the sub-watershed management plans, which were developed in collaboration with CGSBV members. These plans also specify other initiatives to protect the environment and conserve soil, such as gully treatment, while increasing agricultural production by introducing innovative technologies (earthmoving, greenhouse agriculture with vertical drip irrigation).

The objective of the project "Chanje Lavi Plantè" is to increase the income of 90,000 families by supporting the agricultural sector in order to make the productive plains more competitive in its zones of intervention. The three-year project aims to promote increased agricultural productivity, improving the stabilization of watersheds, the intensification of agricultural markets and strengthening the capacity of local organizations. Farmers applying best practices can earn US $ 2,500 per hectare / year on irrigated land, almost twice as a worker in a factory.
