Haiti - Economy : Fuels, an update on the negotiations...

Following the announcement of a major unilateral increase in pump prices (Gasoline + 30 Gdes, Diesel + 30 Gdes and Kerosene + 25 Gdes) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18374-haiti-flash-strong-increase-in-pump-fule-prices.html which provoked strong reactions and forced the government to temporarily suspend the measure https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18421-haiti-flash-given-the-risk-of-social-explosion-privert-back.html , and to enter into negotiations with stakeholders.

Monday to the National Palace, the government has managed to convince the transport unions present of the need to increase the fuel price. However, if the unions agree on the principle, they are not on the amount of the increase.

This new meeting followed that of Friday when President de facto Jocelerme Privert and ves Romain Bastien, Minister of Economy and Finance had posed the problem in terms of reduction of the subsidy of 88 gourdes from the Treasury, burden that the State is no longer able to endure for a long time... hence the absolute need to reduce the burden of the State and therefore increase the cost of fuel at the pump.

The Government proposes two scenarios of increase :

1 - Gasoline + 25 Gdes, Diesel + 20 Gdes and Kerosene + 15 Gdes

2 - Gasoline + 20 Gdes, Diesel + 20 Gdes and Kerosene + 15 Gdes

According to a source participating in the negotiations, the unions refuse anincreases above 16 gourdes on gasoline and diesel and 12 Gourdes on kerosene (unconfirmed).

Both parties are given 3 days to find an agreement on the amount of increases while unions are threatening to leave the negotiating table and trigger a national strike if they do not get satisfaction.
