Haiti - FLASH : Reduction of school subsidies for families

Thursday, leaving a hearing before the Commission Education of the Chamber of Deputies, Jean Beauvois Dorsonne, the Minister of National Education announced that school subsidies for families will be reduced due to lack of government financial resources.

Uniforms and school kits are victims of these measures. The Minister Dorsonne, says that despite the additional economic difficulties that will confront families following the removal of subsidies, the date of the school year is maintained to 5 September "We can not step back from the date [...] there is an obligation to allow schools to have enough time to cover the curriculum [...] below 180 days of class, we can not guarantee a minimum quality education to children [...]"

Regarding the subsidy of 70% on books and school and endowments, the measure should be maintained in full.

For his part, Jean-Philipe Ketel, the President of the Education Commission, urged the Executive to find additional funds to not reduce subsidies. He promises that his colleagues will do everything to quickly vote on amending budget and analyze the budget law for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
