Haiti - Health : The Dominican Republic could prohibit flights from Haiti

Food goods, from the Haitian merchants, traveling each Monday in the border markets have been seized by the Dominican authorities. Among the seized foods: meat, beans, foodstuffs, mainly cassava, plantains, yams, bananas and others, who were brought into the country in plastic bags. Foods were incinerated.

It is noted that many Haitians do not understand the purpose of these seizures, ignoring for many, the existence of cholera in their country, an alarming lack of information, when in Haiti, we are constantly to talk about campaign information. On the other hand, in Santo Domingo, in the Haitian communities it is not uncommon to hear Haitian doubt the veracity of this epidemic...

A team of doctors led by epidemiologist Angy Cerrano examined yesterday more than 30 Haitian of Juana Mendez. None showed symptoms of cholera, although three of them had an intestinal infection caused by different bacteria, according to epidemiologist. "We're in a high risk area, but we hope that the disease does not enter the country"

Among the other precautionary measures taken yesterday with Dajabon by the Dominican authorities to prevent the entry of cholera in the country, all the vehicles coming from Haiti are subjected to a disinfecting pulverization to eliminate all bacteria before entering on the territory.

The Director General of the Dominican Customs Rafael Camilo declared Monday, that it understood the anger of the Haitians, but that its country would continue to take measures "painful" but necessary to prevent the entry of the cholera in Dominican Republic. These measurements can go to a total suspension of the commercial exchanges between the two parts of the island" he said.

With the increase of cholera cases in Haiti, Luis Paulino Rodriguez, President of the Board of Directors of Civil Aviation announced on Tuesday that preventive measures were taken at ports and airports. He also said that in the coming hours, a meeting will be held with the Ministry of Public Health and other agencies to determine additional measures, if necessary. Measures that can lead to a ban on flights from Haiti.

Remember however, that the World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed this Tuesday he was "not necessary to close the borders, restrict travel to the island and the trade with Haiti". However, the important economic issues of the neighboring republic, leaves no doubt as a result of measures which will be implemented in the hours and days ahead. The Dominican Republic has the sovereign right to implement all the means it deems necessary to fight against a possible spread of cholera in its territory. We only hope that these healt operations do not use as a pretext to increase deportations of our compatriots.
