Haiti - Humanitarian : ECHO goes to a new phase

A delegation from the European Commission, visited Haiti from October 4 to 7 to assess the humanitarian action in Europe after the earthquake.

Mr. Kentrschynskyj, head of Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection (ECHO), who led the delegation, said Thursday that the actions of the ECHO was now entering a new phase "Our action will now focus on accompanying the return of IDPs in their area of origin within the framework of a dialogue with Haitian authorities [...] humanitarian aid is distributed at a steady pace, the needs of Haiti's most vulnerable are taken into account "

Esko Kentrschynskyj, said that the European Union (EU) is currently distributing two million liters of water per day and works with some forty organizations, UN humanitarian agencies, NGOs and the Red Cross that intervene with the victims.

"Immediately after the earthquake, the EU has allocated €3 million to meet the emergency, then the EU has allocated 120 million euros", said Lut Fabert, Head of the office the EU Commission in Haiti.

The EU office has elsewhere reported last Wednesday presented to the Commission for the Reconstruction of Haiti (IHRC) projects amounting to $86 million. "Five departments will be well reconstructed with funds from the EU, which will spend $7.5 million to the government, 10 million to civil society and $6 million to the revitalization of agriculture and rural economy. Projects totaling $ 14 million for the construction of major road networks had already been presented at the second meeting of the IHRC August 17 last.

The promises of commitment of the European Union for the Reconstruction of Haiti is estimated at $1.6 billion. The hurricane season, expected to be particularly active this year, only adds to the problems of the country. The EU says ready to provide additional emergency assistance if necessary.
