Haiti - Health : The school hygiene a central concern of the Ministry of Education

From April 21 to 24 is held at the Hotel Kinam, a training of trainers workshop as part of the project of "Friendly schools of hygiene Certification". This is the first step in a series of initiatives leading to the certification of 100 model schools across the country in terms of school health.

About 70 people taking part in this training on hygiene, health promotion and school health. This is to establish a group of trainers to replicate this training in all regions by helping them to better understand the various stages of the project of Certification as well as others in the field of hygiene and sanitation. Note that three categories of trainers will come out of this workshop: seniors, juniors and animators/supervisors.

During the first phase of implementation of the project, three departments are targeted: West, Central and Artibonite. According to Dr. Erold Joseph, Director of School Health of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) which controls this activity "The health conditions of various places of learning must challenge all stakeholders in the education community, including school principals parents, teachers and students."

For his part, Renold Telfort the Director General of MENFP, emphasized the relations existing between health and education recalling that "all studies have shown that 40% of cases of irregularities in school, dropout cases are due to health problems. Whether dermatitis, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, parasitic or serious problems such as HIV / AIDS, early pregnancy, violence or cholera, all these cases illustrate the interdependence between health and education."

Stressing that the school health has always been a concern for the Ministry over the past decade, he recalled a series of outreach activities with schools and students by the Ministry and especially the support in the realization of brought to the realization of the project of Certification of friendly school of hygiene.

For his part, Benito Dumay, the Director General of the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA), project partner, welcomed the new phase of the program, and advocated for an integrated budget planning in education, taking into account both educational needs, but also the physical part of the evolution of the child and their well-being in the classroom.

Bartholomeus Vrolijk, the Head of Education pole and Child Protection at UNICEF reiterated the commitment of the UN agency to support such initiatives, emphasizing the major objective of this project that aims to influence the overall environment of the population to bring adults to adopt behaviors and attitudes conducive to their well-being and that of children.

Note that other partners are involved in the implementation of the project, including the Ministry of Public Health, the United Nations Fund for Population Affairs (UNFPA), the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), UNESCO and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which provides financial support to the tune of $ 2 million to the project over two years.
