Haiti - Insecurity : A Weekend of deadly violence

Friday night a couple in Thomassin has narrowly escaped an ambush on their way home. Thwarting the trap, the driver fled under the shootings of the criminals, his wife was wounded with the leg by a projectile.

Saturday morning on Route Nationale #1, near the bridge of Croix des Missions gunmen stopped a Nissan Frontier belonging to an NGO, forcing the occupant to get off under threat before fleeing with the vehicle of the NGO.

On the morning of Saturday, a woman driving his Toyota was stopped by gunmen in the ruelle Rivière. The driver was forced to abandon his vehicle in the hands of unknowns, who fled at high speed in the direction of Christ Roi, leaving behind a driver under the shock of the assault.

Saturday around 7pm, unknown persons opened fire on a transit vehicle on the airport road (route de l’aéroport), a woman was killed and several passengers injured, one seriously.

An hour later, near the General Hospital, another driver was ambushed, taken as a hostage in his own vehicle he was released later in Cité Soleil, shocked but unharmed.

Several other cases of robbery and vehicle theft were reported this weekend. This worrying situation, is not without recalling, that of 2005 at the time of the election period. While the Haitian National Police (PNH) and MINUSTAH police continue to assure the public that they are able to guarantee order and security of citizens and that every effort is made to that effect, it is clear to citizens that crime is growing at 2 months of the elections, their making fear the worst if the police do nothing to fight more effectively against the resurgence of banditry.
