Haiti - Health : Towards a new vaccination campaign against cholera

The Ministry of Public Health and Population in Haiti (MSPP), supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization (WHO) will perform in the coming months, a new vaccination campaign against cholera for 200,000 people living in conditions of risk of contamination.

400,000 doses of oral vaccine Shanchol (vaccine selected by the Ministry of Health) and approved by the PAHO / WHO since 2012, will be administered to the population into two phases (two doses per person). For this campaign, PAHO / WHO will provide support in the transport, storage and distribution of vaccines in the country.

Recall that in 2012 had took place in Haiti, a first pilot trial of this vaccine https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-4885-haiti-health-beginning-of-a-pilot-program-of-vaccination-against-cholera.html followed by the first vaccination campaign for 100,000 people.

PAHO / WHO recommends caution in the use of this vaccine and call for respect of extremely strict criteria, remember that vaccination, which will be offered in communities without means to fight against cholera, is an additional measure and complementary to other measures, such as ensuring that people have access to safe drinking water, to proper latrines and receive appropriate medical attention.
