Haiti - Social : A sound library for the blind...

Since February 2013, the Knowledge and Freedom Foundation (FOKAL) participates in an innovative and inclusive project of sound library of the Haitian Blind Aid Society (AAHS), funded largely by the European Union (EU ) and developed in close collaboration with Libraries Without Borders (BSF).

The idea was to provide a Haitian sound library the Roger Dorsinville Library. To do this, the documentation committee had for task to select 200 works of Haitian heritage, essential works, explanatory or documentary, which should be part of this first selection. Participants also explored the legal aspect of the project with the help of the Haitian Bureau of copyright and prepare tools to protect the soundtrack, while respecting the law.

In order to read selected texts, the SHAA chose to use volunteer readers, drawing on similar experiments made in Canada. Two hearing sessions n Creole and French were held to determine the best readers and also the type of book most appropriate by reader (youth, fiction or documentary). hese volunteers: young readers, actors and writers who are interested in this activity, have participated in this activity with great enthusiasm and SHAA now has a team of volunteers.

For now, the recordings are made in "Objectif Productions" but SHAA toyed with the idea to have his own recording studio in the future, to continue to enhance its sound collection. For this reason, it participated in the call for proposals 2013 WISE (World Innovation Summit on Education) and the project was selected.

Recall that in Haiti, nearly 80,000 people living with visual disabilities have limited access to education and access to books. The SHAA work for several years for the inclusion of blind and FOKAL is one of its oldest partners.

The sound library can be consulted at the SHAA located street Ricourt, Delmas 31, from December 2013.
