Haiti - Social : Law students protest against a program of Sophia Martelly

Several students of the Faculty of Law of Jacmel protested last Friday on a distribution of food baskets, organized by the office of the presidency within the faculty, as part of a program launched by the First Lady Sophia Martelly, through several universities in the country called "raffle university". Jean-Gardy Seide, a student in Educational Sciences and Dumas Pythagoras, a sociologist team member of the program, acting as facilitators of the event.

"Frustrating," "revolting," "insulting," are among others the words that we could hear on the lips of some students. The intervention of members of the dean has not been able to calm the student protesters.

Andrenel Lubin, a third year student, has nevertheless welcomed the initiative taken by the government Martelly, which, for once, shows that he thought to the Haitian universities. However, he strongly criticizes the way the project was developed. "It is inconceivable that our leaders continue to treat students across the country, as people living in poor neighborhoods [...] A quarter of a bag of rice, oil, some spaghetti and salmon, estimated at between 1,000 and 1.500 gourds it is more than humiliating for the country's future leaders."

Jean Marcus Raymond, also a student, believes that the Office of the President should think to give students winners premiums appropriate to their area, including books, computers and others to enable them to better enhance their knowledge. He describes the program of demagogy, with a budget of sixty million gourdes, which aims to reach about 20,000 students belonging to the State University of Haiti (UEH). He believes that this sum could provide the eleven entities UEH with a modern library and a laboratory. "It is time to stop thinking individual but rather collective," hoping that the government Martelly-Conille develops practical and sustainable projects for the benefit of the people, instead of continuing to operate as an NGO.

Dr. Georges Greffin, Dean of the Faculty of Law, following a meeting with some student protesters told them they had the right to refuse or accept these gifts, inviting them instead to set up a liaison committee between the coordination of the raffle and students to find a solution in this case.

"This protest movement is a clear signal to all other faculties involved in this program in the country so that they follow our track," have declared several students from the Faculty of Law of Jacmel.

However, note that the students had no problem for other awards are distributed, including mobile phones and recharge cards...
