Did you know that the popular term tidal wave refers to a sudden and temporary invasion of the sea on land coasts, quickly submerging the protective sea walls.

Unlike the tsunami which finds its origin exclusively in an underground geological movement such as an earthquake or a collapse, the real tidal wave is generally caused by extreme weather factors.It often occurs during severe maritime storms or tropical cyclones, when very low atmospheric pressure and strong winds literally raise the ocean level, pushing water inland to low-lying lands.

This phenomenon is particularly destructive if it coincides with a period of astronomical high tide.The coastal dykes then give way under the repeated assaults of the waves, causing serious salty floods which devastate homes and permanently pollute coastal agricultural lands.
