Haiti - Environment : Fight against the use of polystyrene «Let's change the system, not the climate !»

The National Citizens' Climate Movement (Alternatiba Haiti) demands that the Government unconditionally implement the decree of July 10, 2013, prohibiting the production, import, sale, and use of polystyrene (Styrofoam) in all its forms within the national territory. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-8995-haiti-notice-ban-on-plastic-bags-and-styrofoam.html

From July 3rd to 5, 2026, 24 women and 28 men from 23 local groups of the National Citizens' Climate Movement Alternatiba Haiti and 4 civil society organizations met in Ouanaminthe for the movement's first National Coordination meeting of 2026. Over three days, participants assessed the socio-economic, political, and environmental situation in the country, reviewed the work of the local groups, and received training on action. non-violent and prepared for the national mobilization of July 10th, which marks 13 years since the Haitian government issued a decree banning polystyrene in all its forms, a decree it has never enforced.

Considering that there has never been any serious commitment to enforcing the decree of July 10, 2013, prohibiting the production, import, sale, and use of polystyrene, while the country continues to be overwhelmed by plastic and polystyrene waste that clogs ravines, rivers, and canals, exacerbating flooding and endangering public health;

Considering that environmental protection is a matter of public health, social justice, and respect for the rights of future generations;

The National Citizens' Movement for Climate demands the immediate implementation of the July 10, 2013 decree banning polystyrene, as well as concrete measures to encourage environmentally friendly alternatives. It invites all citizens, organizations, and institutions to mobilize on July 10, 2026, to demand compliance with the decree and the protection of the environment.

Alternatiba Haiti, through its 40 local groups, will continue to lead the fight for an alternative development model based on climate justice, transparency, citizen participation, and respect for the interests of the Haitian people. No development without security, no environmental protection without political will, and no sustainable future without respect for the law !
