On Monday, May 11, 2026, hospitals in Cité Soleil, Haiti, evacuated their patients, and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) temporarily suspended its operations there as violent clashes between armed groups, involving gangs from the "Viv Ansanm" terrorist coalition, intensified in the Duvivier and Cité Soleil neighborhoods, near the airport.
MSF reported that several hundred residents had sought refuge at its local hospital, located in a poor area of Port-au-Prince, where one of its security guards was wounded by a stray bullet inside the hospital grounds.
Fontaine Hospital, another hospital in the area, told Reuters that it had evacuated newborns from its intensive care unit. MSF specified that it had taken in some patients transferred from Fontaine, including pregnant women who had given birth overnight. “Currently, no hospitals are open in the fighting zone," the organization said in a statement, adding that despite the exponential increase in local medical needs, the NGO could not protect its staff or patients from the gunfire.
MSF reported having taken in more than 800 refugees, but faced with the worsening situation, it decided to temporarily suspend hospital operations until further notice, as the clashes endangered its staff and patients. MSF stated that as of May 11, "not a single hospital is open in the area where the fighting is taking place."
The fighting has continued since Sunday morning between members of the "Chen Mechen" gang and affiliates, as well as other gangs that were, until recently, its allies.
