Comprehensive strategy for sovereign, modern and inclusive tourism in Haiti

Under the leadership of Stéphanie Smith, Minister of Tourism, the Haitian tourism sector is entering a crucial phase of transformation. This renewal is based on a three-pronged strategy: field visits to strategic hubs in the North and the Great South, a strong commitment to youth, and strengthened international cooperation. The objective is clear : to anchor Haitian tourism in its cultural identity while modernizing its infrastructure.

Accompanied by Ms. Sinedie Saintil Dupuy, Director General of the Ministry, and Yvens Alexis, her Chief of Staff, Minister Smith conducted an evaluation tour of major projects underway in the Great North. These projects aim to transform the visitor experience through several key areas:

Modernization of Visitor Services : The inspection of the Ministry's kiosks and the rehabilitation of the Cap-Haitien International Airport are central to this initiative. The goal is to enhance the destination's connectivity and attractiveness.

Rehabilitation of Local Infrastructure : Modernizing the Northern Tourism Market and enhancing heritage trails are also priorities. These actions will showcase local heritage and offer visitors a more authentic experience.

Needs Analysis : Direct dialogue with local stakeholders is essential to guide investments toward sustainable effectiveness. This participatory approach will better meet the expectations of visitors and the needs of local communities.

For Minister Smith, tourism is not simply about welcoming international visitors; it is a driver of regional development and a source of national pride. Emphasis is placed on promoting living heritage, particularly sacred lakou (Souvenance, Soukri, Badjo, Bassin Saint-Jacques) and patron saint festivals. These places, symbols of harmony between earth and spirit, form the core of a responsible tourism offering that generates direct economic benefits for local communities.

Haitian youth are at the heart of this vision, considered a strategic force. The Ministry is committed to making young people the main drivers of local development through training and innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional integration.

On the diplomatic front, the Minister strengthened institutional synergies this week with the United States Embassy in Haiti. During a meeting with a delegation led by Ms. Amparo Garcia, concrete prospects for collaboration on cultural projects aligned with local priorities were discussed.

This international cooperation is part of a sovereign public policy that reaffirms two essential conditions: the Government's unwavering commitment to restoring security throughout the country, a prerequisite for unlocking the country's full tourism potential, and a mutual strengthening of skills to ensure structured and effective project management.

By combining technical rigor, cultural promotion, and strategic partnerships, the Ministry of Tourism is striving to rebuild a renewed image of Haiti. As Minister Smith emphasizes, "Tourism development is a collective responsibility. Every citizen, every community organization, and every international partner is called upon to contribute to this journey toward a stable, prosperous future, proud of its roots."
