Haiti - Politic : Tourism, a major pillar of economic development (video)

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, John Herrick Dessources, Minister of Tourism, presented the priorities and strategic directions of the tourism sector at the 36th edition of "Tuesdays of the Nation", reflecting the Government's commitment to making it a central driver of economic recovery.

The Minister presented 20 projects completed or underway, including ten physical projects spread across several regions of the country. In the North, initiatives focus on renovating visitor facilities in Milot and Cap-Haitien, as well as improving services at Cap-Haïtien International Airport. In the South, Grand'Anse, and West, work includes refurbishing departmental offices, redeveloping strategic tourist areas, and strengthening tourism training and security infrastructure.

In parallel, ten non-physical projects are structuring the modernization of the sector. These initiatives include recruiting new managers, strengthening the tourist police, developing a new narrative about Haiti, modernizing the sector's technology, and structuring the legal framework for initiatives and institutions linked to the Ministry. The Government is also undertaking an inventory of the hotel stock, standardizing training programs, and organizing a national forum on tourism investment.

The expected outcomes include attracting investment, stimulating economic activity, creating direct and indirect jobs, and strengthening national competitiveness.

The Government reaffirms that tourism is now a key pillar of economic development. The actions undertaken are structured around five strategic areas, ranging from improving public and private services to planning for medium- and long-term tourism development.

Aware of the impact of insecurity on the sector, the Minister emphasized the government's commitment to decentralizing tourism offerings to other regions of the country in order to reduce crime while promoting a more equitable distribution of economic opportunities.

The Government reiterates its commitment to mobilizing all stakeholders and data in the sector to strengthen the impact of initiatives, facilitate private investment, and sustainably support the recovery of tourism in Haiti.
