Haiti - Politic : The Government mobilized in response to Hurricane Melissa

On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the National Emergency Operations Center (COUN) held a press conference as part of the 27th annual "Tuesdays of the Nation" to inform the public, particularly those in the most vulnerable areas, including the Southern Peninsula, about official safety guidelines to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Melissa on the country.

Classified as a Category 5 hurricane, Melissa is currently moving at a speed of 15 km/h, with gusts reaching 295 km/h and rainfall estimated at over 42 cm. These extreme conditions risk causing major flooding, landslides, and rising river levels.

Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the National Committee for Risk and Disaster Management (CNGRD) adopted a series of urgent measures to protect the population.

Through the departmental and municipal risk and disaster management committees, the Government has activated the Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) in the affected regions. Reception centers are already operational, stocks of hygiene and food kits have been strategically positioned, and cash transfers are underway via mobile money accounts to benefit the most vulnerable families.

The Ministries of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Economy and Finance, Social Affairs and Labor, Environment, Agriculture, and Public Health are working together within this integrated emergency response framework to limit loss of life and material damage.
