Haiti - Italy : Minister Vernet Joseph in the 44th plenary conference of FAO

Sunday, June 29, 2025, as part of the 44th Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Haitian delegation intervened on the theme of innovations in agrifood systems worldwide, with a particular emphasis on the Haitian context.

Vernet Joseph, the Minister of Agriculture, speaking in synergy with the Haiti ambassador near FAO, Gandy Thomas, underlined Haiti's commitment to the sustainable transformation of his food systems.

Minister Joseph highlighted Haiti's integrated approach, based on the link between increased agricultural production, healthier food, preserving fragile ecosystems and improving living conditions, both in rural and urban areas.

He then presented several innovations already implemented on a national level, whether technological, organizational, political, institutional, social or financial which reflect the desire to modernize its agricultural practices while strengthening the resilience of communities.

In conclusion, the Minister made a series of concrete recommendations for FAO, in particular :

• Support for the implementation or strengthening of national multi-sectoral coordination bodies dedicated to food and nutritional security (SAN), with a clear mandate and increased technical capacities;

• support for the development of territorial agri-food models adapted to fragile areas, integrating agro-ecology, sustainable management of resources and local planning, with a view to strengthening the resilience of rural communities in the face of climatic, economic and security shocks;

• Support for the structuring of rural startups and SMEs;

• The creation of a technical and financial support mechanism of FAO for young agrifood companies in rural areas, in order to promote local transformation, innovation, employment of young and women and thus relaunch rural economies.
