Haiti - Education : 6th A.F., poor academic results in the last national assessment

As part of measures aimed at improving the quality of learning, the Ministry of National Education conducted a diagnostic assessment of the learning of 6th fundamental year students during the 2021-2022 school year. The objective was to measure student performance and identify areas requiring improvement. The results of this national survey were finally presented to the various Ministry officials on March 18, 2025, during a workshop held in Pétion-ville.

At the opening of this workshop, Yves Roblin, the Director General of the Ministry, drew the participants' attention to academic assessment in the Haitian education system, which is marked by failure, especially in official exams, high repetition rates, and significant dropout rates. "The analysis of these results gives rise to concern. Taking into account all the problems plaguing the education system, the Ministry is intervening to redress the balance," declared Roblin, while advocating for the strengthening of the Inspectorate and the provision of teaching and learning materials to schools.

In her speech, Inspector General Nadine Henry emphasized the importance of assessment in an education system. "General summative assessment allows us to detect what students have learned. But diagnostic assessment, which is important for the State, allows us to determine the level at which learners meet their prerequisites in terms of the core skills they already have."

Kendy Nicolas, Director of Fundamental Education, who is in charge of this project, believes it is important to consider regional assessments in order to compare student performance, taking into account the realities of each Departmental Directorate of Education (DDE).

"The national diagnostic assessment administered in June 2022 involved 40,092 students in the 6th fundamental year, 1,642 school principals, including 80 private school principals, and 1,708 teachers." According to the results, students achieved an average score of 48.2 in Creole, 30.7 in French, and 25.8 in mathematics. Kendy Nicolas advocates for mother tongue teaching and learning, citing the survey results, which highlight areas requiring improvement.
