This report is produced by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Haiti in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the humanitarian situation in Port-au-Prince following the violence that broke out on 29 February. The report covers the period from 20 to 24 April 2024.

Summary :

Acts of armed violence are repeated across the country, particularly in the West department where the capital Port-au-Prince is located. The commune of Arcahaie was notably attacked by armed men on April 23 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42205-haiti-news-zapping.html , the press reported. In the capital, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy was the subject of looting and vandalism https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42178-haiti-flash-the-faculty-of-medicine-and-pharmacy-vandalized-and-looted.html , an act which was strongly condemned by civil society and the humanitarian community. Not only must health spaces be respected and protected, but these attacks harm key sectors already seriously affected by the crisis.

In this context, the number of displaced people in the Metropolitan Zone of Port-au-Prince (ZMPAP) has seen a slight increase (+1.4% since April 4), with 90,254 displaced in 85 active sites recorded as of April 20 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

New displacements in the capital, but also to the provinces, creates other needs, particularly in terms of health. As of April 11, and since the resurgence of cholera in October 2022, 82,875 suspected cases of cholera have been reported, reports the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). A total of 80,436 people were hospitalized over this period, with 4,836 confirmed cases and 1,270 deaths. Suspected cases of cholera in the departments of Artibonite, Centre, North and West represent more than half of the total cases in the country.

Over the past three weeks, more than 100 humanitarian containers have been collected from the Caribbean Port Services (CPS) port, the logistics industry said. The main Varreux terminal, where fuel reserves are stored, has been closed since April 22 due to repeated attacks by armed gangs. This situation could lead to even more severe restrictions in the supply of gasoline.
