Haiti - FLASH : CARICOM in Haiti carrying a proposal to resolve the crisis

Monday, September 4th, 2023, the Group of Eminent Persons of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), appointed as mediator of the Haitian crisis, composed of former Prime Ministers : Kenny Anthony of Saint Lucia, Bruce Golding of Jamaica and Perry Christie of the Bahamas arrived in Port-au-Prince where they will stay until September 10, with a view to continuing discussions with all the actors involved in the current crisis and finding a political compromise aimed at stabilizing the country and promoting a democratic transition

The mediators should submit a document to the stakeholders of this crisis aimed at a possible political agreement which includes, among other things, the balance of powers between the executive actors, the inclusion and the responsibility of the High Transitional Council, the Control Body of the Government action, a Government of national unity and the operations of the Council of Ministers... The other points of this possible agreement relate to the electoral process, security and reforms (institutional and judicial).

Alongside this [ultimate ?] mediation mission, Roosevelt Skerrit the Prime Minister of Dominica and current President a.i. of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) announced last week at a press conference that the leaders of the organization will meet in Videoconference on September 6, 2023 to discuss the socio-political situation in Haiti. He underlined "We owe a lot to this people. And it is important that not only the Heads of Government, but also the entire Caribbean community, commit to the problems that Haiti is facing, so that we can provide it with a moral and collective commitment [...]"

According to Skerrit, the leaders of the Caribbean region will meet to receive a report from the group of eminent persons and to determine the future actions that Caricom should take to provide assistance and support to Haiti adding that Caricom will play a "crucial" role in the coordination of global efforts to provide Haiti with all the support it needs.
