Haiti - FLASH : Kamala Harris will pressure Caribbean leaders to help Haiti
Thursday, June 8, 2023 in Nasseau (Bahamas archipelago) the Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris, will renew the pressure of the Biden administration for an international force to help Haiti in its current security crisis when she will meet with the leaders of the Caribbean.
US officials said the multilateral force could provide "near-term support" to the Haitian National Police by securing "a limited number of critical infrastructure sites in Port-au-Prince, such as the airport and ports," relieve the burden on local police to focus their resources on fighting gangs.
The Biden Administration has been pushing for a multinational force to be deployed in Haiti since October. But the plan failed due to the lack of any Nation including the United States, to be willing to lead the force, and was met with opposition in the United Nations Security Council, Russia and the China expressing skepticism of the plan.
"The vice president will reiterate our administration’s support for a multinational force in Haiti," said a senior US administration official. "We’ve made it clear that we believe the security and humanitarian situation in Haiti is worsening and the situation on the ground will not improve without armed security assistance from international partners."
"Any decisions about such a security force would be done in consultation with the Haitian government as well as the UN. Those discussions are still ongoing,” the official added," the official stressed, adding "We will remain in coordination with partners on next steps to address urgent security needs."
